I am passionate about brain development, specifically neuropsychology and how the developing brain learns, which led to collaboration with professionals supporting neurocognitive functioning in teens and adults. I focus on helping young teens and adults with disabilities continue to build critical living skills and self-advocacy. I have spent the past 25 years working with students and supporting families.
I began my early educational studies in my homeland of Barbados. After arriving in New York City, I started working as a nanny, and my path to becoming a teacher began. As it became evident that being an educator was going to be my journey, I applied to Lehman College, where I received a B.A . in Sociology and continued there for a Master’s in early childhood special education, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
My professional career started as a paraprofessional and then as a classroom teacher in private special education schools in New York City before moving into supervisory and leadership roles working closely with teachers. During this time, I continued my studies and attained my M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Bank Street College. The next step was becoming Head of School at a private special education K-12 school. I am currently an adjunct Special Education professor at CUNY.

special education field
I met Emily over 10 years ago at a private school, where I worked as an educational supervisor and curriculum coordinator, and her daughter was a student in the elementary grades. As the mother of a daughter with special needs, Emily has extensive experience navigating the New York City special education process. Emily is knowledgeable as an advocate for families and is known for her advocacy with teachers, related service providers, attorneys, and program directors. Emily continues to be actively involved in post-secondary advocacy, as her daughter is now a sophomore in college. Emily understands the process of managing services in a neurodiverse world.
